الملخص

كان التباين بين النور والظلام، والشتاء والصيف، أول ظاهرتين طبيعيتين جذبتا انتباه البشر، وكانت أول مشكلة حيرتهم في حياتهم هي التعايش بين الخير والشر، والجريمة والفضيلة، والصحة والمرض. وعندما تمّ تجسيد تلك العناصر، أصبحت قوى النور خالقة الخير الروحي والدنيوي، بينما عادت قوى الظلام إلى الظهور كمبادئ للشر. ولكن هذا لم يكن يعني الكثير بالنسبة لليونانيين، الذين جعلوا من الحياة البشرية نقطة انطلاقهم للتفكير. إذ يمكن فهم المفهوم اليوناني للشر في العالم الخارق للطبيعة على أفضل وجه من خلال النظر أولاً إلى الشياطين، بالمعنى البسيط؛ وثانيًا، إلى تلك المخلوقات المرتبطة بخطة العقاب الأخلاقي؛ وثالثًا، إلى الطبيعة المنسوبة إلى الآلهة
